Today, the authorities at Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur initiated the release of the season’s first floodwater by opening the floodgates, specifically Gate No. 7, in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida.

According to officials, four gates were opened, with three located on the left and one on the right. This action signifies the commencement of flood management efforts for the upcoming monsoon season.

Deputy Chief Minister Parida marked the occasion by lighting a ceremonial lamp before engineers began the water release. The control room of the dam reported a strong flow of water as the gates were activated, leading to a significant discharge downstream.

It was noted that five more gates would be opened later in the day to manage the increasing water levels. The dam authorities confirmed that the current release is within safe parameters and aims to balance the inflow from rainfall upstream.

Residents gathered around the area to witness this event, which traditionally indicates the start of floodwater management in Odisha. Officials stressed that the controlled release is essential to prevent undue pressure on the dam structure, ensuring the safety of districts downstream.

As the longest earthen dam in Asia, Hirakud Dam is vital for flood control, irrigation, and power generation. Each year, the opening of its gates is a notable event for both engineers and the local community, symbolizing the state’s readiness to face the challenges posed by the monsoon.
