Vedanta Aluminium Celebrates Nutrition Month with Community Health Initiatives

Bhubaneswar: Strong nutrition serves as a cornerstone for healthier families, vibrant communities, and promising futures for children. Embracing this philosophy, Vedanta Aluminium, the largest aluminium producer in India, celebrated Rashtriya Poshan Maah with a range of nutrition-oriented community initiatives in Jharsuguda, Lanjigada, BALCO, and surrounding mining areas. Over the course of the month, the programs reached more than 3,600 individuals, engaging women, children, and students through activities aimed at improving nutrition, health, and overall wellbeing. These initiatives enhanced awareness regarding maternal and child health, dietary variety, and preventive healthcare, while motivating communities to integrate healthier habits into their daily routines.

This annual observance, established by the Government of India, aims to improve nutrition outcomes through awareness and behavioral shifts, particularly for women and children. Reflecting this mission, Vedanta Aluminium actively promotes healthcare, nutrition, education, and women’s empowerment through various community development programs. A prominent example is Nand Ghar, Vedanta’s flagship social initiative, which is revolutionizing Anganwadis into modern hubs for nutrition, healthcare, early childhood education, and women’s empowerment. Currently, over 13,000 Nand Ghars across 16 states are benefiting more than 400,000 children and 300,000 women through comprehensive developmental efforts.

Rajesh Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, remarked, “The foundation of a nation’s progress lies in the health and wellbeing of its people. Good nutrition is fundamental to building healthier communities and brighter futures. Poshan Maah provides an important opportunity to strengthen awareness, encourage healthy practices, and engage communities in meaningful conversations around wellbeing. Through these initiatives, we remain committed to supporting mothers, children, and their families while empowering them to build healthier and more resilient futures.”

In Vedanta Aluminium’s operational areas, Poshan Maah united communities around the common goal of enhanced health and nutrition. In Jharsuguda, mothers at the Odisha Special Armed Police (OSAP) Nand Ghar engaged in interactive sessions with health experts, gaining valuable knowledge on maternal nutrition, child health, hygiene, and healthy feeding practices. This effort was part of Vedanta Aluminium’s broader community nutrition initiatives, with 133 Nand Ghars serving over 2,000 women and children. These interventions fostered awareness about small but impactful choices that contribute to healthier families and brighter futures for children.

In Lanjigada, the focus extended beyond merely raising awareness to building healthier, more self-sufficient communities. Reaching out to 644 beneficiaries, these initiatives integrated health and nutrition efforts with livelihood training. Women from self-help groups learned to create nutritious ragi-based products, showcasing how locally sourced millets can enhance both nutrition and income. A food exhibition also promoted balanced diets and healthier eating behaviors among families.

The initiatives continued across Vedanta’s mining regions, impacting over 559 individuals across 13 Anganwadi centers, where communities participated in discussions about nutrition and wellbeing. At BALCO, topics extended to daily practices, with 473 mothers, children, and community members taking part in activities under the Arogya and Nand Ghar projects, which advocated for dietary diversity, healthy feeding practices, and nutritious cooking using local ingredients.

Although Rashtriya Poshan Maah lasts only a month, its impact is lasting. By equipping families with practical insights into nutrition, health, and wellbeing, Vedanta Aluminium is actively contributing to the development of stronger community foundations. This dedication is evident in the company’s broader initiatives across healthcare, education, women’s empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods, positively affecting over one million people each year in its operational regions, thereby fostering healthier, more resilient, and self-sufficient communities.
