Tensions escalated in Bhadrak district of Odisha on Friday as the administration canceled student union elections at two local colleges due to significant student misconduct.
The elections, which were set to occur across all of Odisha’s colleges and universities on October 15, were halted at Bhadrak Women’s College and Naami College in Bhandaripokhari. College authorities cited serious violations of campus discipline by certain student groups as the reason for this decision.
Protests Erupt on Campus
The abrupt cancellation led to immediate protests by students at Bhadrak Women’s College, who took to the streets to express their discontent with the administration’s decision. Demonstrators contended that punishing the entire student body for the actions of a few individuals is unjust.
In response to concerns about potential unrest and law enforcement issues, local authorities deployed police to the campus. Security measures have been intensified around both colleges to avert any further disturbances during the nomination period.
Election Process Continues Elsewhere
These developments occur on a significant day for candidate nominations throughout the state. According to the schedule provided by the state government, candidates were allowed to submit their nomination papers today, October 9, between 10 AM and 1 PM.
The official list of valid candidate nominations is set to be released later today at 5 PM. While nomination processes proceed as planned in other educational institutions across Odisha, regular academic and election activities remain suspended at the two impacted colleges in Bhadrak.
