Odisha Aims for 100 MTPA Steel Production by 2030: CM Majhi

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Friday that Odisha is dedicated to producing 100 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of steel by 2030, leveraging its resources, policy framework, infrastructure, and execution capabilities.

Speaking at a special event in Sambalpur district, CM Majhi highlighted the partnership between JSW Steel Limited and Japan’s JFE Steel Corporation as a crucial step in transforming Odisha from an iron-ore producer to a high-value steel manufacturing center.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), this marks Odisha’s largest single Japanese investment at ₹15,000 crore. This investment will increase JSW Steel’s existing capacity by an additional 10 MTPA, enhancing Odisha’s presence in the global steel market.

“I reaffirm Odisha’s long-term industrial vision: We are committed to producing 100 MTPA of steel by 2030. It is a strategic commitment backed by resources, policy, infrastructure, and meticulous execution,” stated Majhi.

He noted that the state currently produces approximately 40 million tonnes of steel annually and is on track to reach 100 million tonnes per annum to satisfy growing domestic and export demands driven by infrastructure development and downstream industries. This investment will boost the state’s production capacity.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Deogarh will create the Sambalpur growth economic corridor, attracting ₹1 lakh crore in investment and generating over 2 lakh jobs.

“In the upcoming days, Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Deogarh will form the Sambalpur growth corridor, similar to the state capital growth region. Investments worth ₹1 lakh crore shall be brought in by industries, generating a potential of more than 2 lakh jobs through this initiative,” he announced.

On this occasion, CM Majhi emphasized that the JSW-JFE partnership will enhance Odisha’s capabilities in high-grade and specialty steel through advanced Japanese technology and operational know-how.

The total JSW-JFE venture is expected to involve an investment of over ₹30,000 crore. As the state moves towards high-end steel production, the Chief Minister underscored the strategic importance of JFE’s expertise, especially in electrical steel, which is essential for electric mobility, renewable energy, high-efficiency motors, transformers, and the evolving power ecosystem. He mentioned that the project will create skilled employment and foster an advanced downstream manufacturing base, positioning Odisha on the global supply chain map.

Inviting JFE to expand further in Odisha, the Chief Minister made a special request for investment in his home district of Keonjhar, citing up to 50% lower overall production costs due to direct access to high-grade iron ore, reduced logistics, proximity to key industrial corridors, and improving infrastructure. He assured fast-track facilitation and incentive support for strategic investments.
