Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced that students from Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities will be exempt from paying admission fees when enrolling in government medical and engineering colleges across the state.

This decision was made on Monday after the Chief Minister learned that many deserving SC and ST students encounter financial barriers during the admission process, despite their success in highly competitive entrance exams.

An official statement indicated that Majhi has instructed that qualifying students will not be required to pay any fees at the time of admission or for the first six months following their enrollment.

For numerous students, passing an entrance exam is merely the initial hurdle in obtaining a professional degree. The expenses associated with admission and other related costs can create additional obstacles, particularly for those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Odisha government’s initiative seeks to bridge this gap for SC and ST students entering government medical and engineering colleges.

The Chief Minister’s directive came after reports about students who had successfully qualified for these competitive programs yet faced challenges in securing the necessary funds for admission.

This fee waiver is anticipated to enable eligible students to finalize their admission processes without the immediate burden of financial constraints.

Additionally, SC and ST students will benefit from this relief not only during the admission phase but also for a period of six months afterward.

While the government has yet to provide a comprehensive list of fees that will be waived under this initiative, further details are expected to emerge once the state issues formal guidelines.

This measure specifically targets government medical and engineering colleges in Odisha, with a detailed implementation plan to be released soon by the state government.
