The egg market in Odisha has experienced a notable increase, with retail prices rising to Rs 9 per egg, up from Rs 7.15 just a few days prior. Wholesale prices have also escalated, with trays now costing Rs 270 compared to the previous Rs 180.
Gokulananda Mallick, the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister, linked the rise in prices to several factors, such as heightened global demand, an uptick in exports, and increased chicken mortality rates during the summer months. He pointed out that while traders are selling eggs at Rs 7.15, retailers are charging consumers about Rs 9.
“All these issues are the main reasons for the increase in egg prices,” Mallick stated.
In response to the supply shortage, the state government has announced further assistance for the poultry sector. In addition to the current subsidy of up to Rs 1 crore, an extra Rs 10 crore will be allocated to stabilize the supply.
Officials anticipate that prices will stabilize as production levels improve. The government aims to reach a production target of 2 crore eggs per day to satisfy demand and restore market equilibrium.
