NTPC Aims for 149 GW Power Generation Capacity by 2032

NTPC Limited is set to enhance its total power generation capacity to 149 gigawatts (GW) by the year 2032, adding approximately 58 GW to its current capacity of 91 GW, as stated by Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh. This expansion will encompass various energy sources, particularly renewable energy, as the company endeavors to strengthen its generation portfolio to satisfy India’s escalating electricity needs.

During the KPMG ENRich 2026 event held in New Delhi, Singh elaborated on the company’s expansion strategy, placing a significant emphasis on increasing nuclear power generation as part of its long-term energy vision. NTPC is expediting its initiatives within the nuclear energy sector, aiming for an installed capacity of around 30 GW of nuclear power as part of its comprehensive expansion plans leading up to 2037.

“Out of the 250 GW capacity we aim to achieve by 2037, about 30 GW will come from nuclear,” Singh revealed. As part of this initiative, NTPC has already completed feasibility studies for proposed nuclear power projects located in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha. The company is also investigating additional sites in other states for future development of nuclear capacity.

The anticipated expansion aligns with the rising electricity demand in the country and the necessity to diversify India’s energy mix by integrating more renewable and non-fossil fuel sources. Singh pointed out that despite global geopolitical and economic challenges, India has exhibited resilience in managing energy prices effectively.

“In India, we have not experienced the same surge in energy prices that other regions have faced due to various global disturbances,” he remarked. He noted a significant increase in electricity demand, with an impressive rise of 21 percent in October alone, indicating a consistent upward trend month after month.

NTPC’s ambitious capacity expansion is expected to enhance its pivotal role in fulfilling India’s future energy needs while facilitating the country’s shift towards a more sustainable and diversified power generation landscape.
