Dr. Satyajit Nayak, IGP (Central Range), highlighted the significance of hockey’s rich tradition in Odisha and its valuable lessons on discipline, teamwork, and mental fortitude during his address at the opening of the 76th State Police Hockey Championship-2026 at the renowned Kalinga Stadium.
In front of officers and participating teams, Dr. Nayak pointed out that this annual event serves a purpose beyond mere competition; it is a vital opportunity to cultivate essential qualities needed in everyday law enforcement roles. He remarked on hockey’s integral place in Odisha’s sports culture, celebrating the journey of local athletes who have progressed from grassroots levels to international acclaim.
As per the Central Range IGP, the fundamental requirements of effective policing such as physical stamina, situational awareness, tactical discipline, emotional resilience, and high-pressure performance, closely reflect the skills required on a hockey field.

Dr. Nayak stated, emphasizing that the essence of shared responsibility and effective teamwork is just as crucial for maintaining public order as it is for achieving success in sports.
He encouraged the competing teams to engage passionately while respecting the rules, referees, and their rivals. True sportsmanship, he noted, instills humility in success and provides important lessons from losses.
Dr. Nayak also urged younger officers from various units and districts to adopt sports as a lifelong pursuit, explaining how consistent physical activity enhances operational readiness and aids in stress management during duty. He praised the Odisha Police Sports & Cultural Association, along with coaches, referees, and support staff, for their efforts in organizing this premier tournament.
In concluding his remarks, Dr. Nayak reminded the athletes that true sportsmanship goes beyond the final score:
