Gautam Adani and Karan Adani recently visited the Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys’ (IMFA) facility at Therubali as the Adani Group progresses with plans for a massive Rs 1.08 lakh crore integrated aluminium initiative in Odisha. This project encompasses a refinery, smelter, power plant, and data center.
The visit highlights the increasing commitment of the Adani Group to expand its industrial activities in Odisha, with plans to establish one of the country’s largest Greenfield integrated aluminium complexes in collaboration with UAE-based International Resources Holding (IRH). If realized, this venture would represent one of the most significant industrial investments in the state’s history.
The proposed complex is set to include a 4 million tonnes per annum (TPA) alumina refinery, a 2 million TPA aluminium smelter, a downstream aluminium park with a capacity of 1 million TPA, a 4,000 MW captive power plant, and a 400 MW green energy facility, all designed to create a comprehensive aluminium value chain in Odisha.
In addition to the aluminium project, the Adani Group is also looking to invest in other infrastructure developments in the state, such as a substantial thermal power plant and a digital data center, further solidifying its presence in the industrial and energy sectors.
Rayagada district has emerged as a prime candidate for a substantial portion of these investments due to its rich bauxite reserves. There are plans for a Rs 41,650 crore alumina refinery and power plant, which experts believe could significantly transform the region’s industrial environment and establish it as a key manufacturing center.
During their visit to Therubali, senior technical personnel from the Adani Group evaluated important project elements, such as land availability, transportation access, and the state of supporting infrastructure. These evaluations are crucial for shaping the project’s implementation strategy.
Industry analysts suggest that this substantial investment could lead to the creation of numerous direct and indirect jobs while promoting industrial growth in southern Odisha. The scale of the project is also anticipated to stimulate considerable economic activity through related industries, logistics, and support services.
Locally, the proposed development has sparked a sense of cautious optimism. Residents and industry representatives are hopeful that this investment will yield long-term economic advantages while prioritizing environmental sustainability and inclusive growth, marking a pivotal moment in Odisha’s industrial evolution.
