Odisha's Crackdown on Unauthorized Drug Sales Targets 137 Chemist Shops

Kendrapada: In a comprehensive effort to address the illegal distribution of psychotropic drugs, officials in Odisha have confiscated 1,100 ampoules of Pentazocine injections along with other pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, valued at approximately Rs 9.70 lakh in Kendrapada.

This special anti-drug initiative, which is running from October 1 to 15, is organized by the Directorate of Drugs Control under the Health and Family Welfare Department, with support from law enforcement. Thus far, the operation has inspected 220 wholesale and retail pharmaceutical outlets.

As a result, administrative measures have been initiated against 137 establishments for purported breaches of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940 and its associated regulations.

Authorities are scrutinizing the acquisition and distribution of psychotropic medications such as Alprazolam, Nitrazepam, Pentazocine, and Tramadol, ensuring these drugs are dispensed solely with valid prescriptions from licensed medical professionals.

Additionally, drugs valued at around Rs 1.92 lakh were seized from unlicensed pharmacies located in the Astharanga police jurisdiction in Puri, the Jonk area in Nuapada, and various locations in Deogarh. Legal cases have been filed against individuals suspected of involvement in these illicit activities.

The enforcement operation is focused on preventing the unauthorized sale and misappropriation of psychotropic medications throughout Odisha.
