Jio’s network now reaches several kilometers into the sea, enabling fishermen to maintain contact with their families and boat operators during their trips.

“Previously, when we ventured into the sea, our families had to wait until we returned. Now we can communicate with them and check on their well-being,”

said Harekrushna Mallik, a fisherman from Paradip who has spent years navigating the unpredictable waters.

The advantages extend beyond just emotional support. Instant communication allows fishing crews to inform boat owners about their whereabouts, fishing conditions, and anticipated return times. For operators like Gyana Ranjan Mohanty, who oversees two boats from Paradip, this has optimized their planning processes.

“Crews can relay information about their catch and the conditions at sea. We can prepare for their arrival by organizing ice, labor, packaging, and buyers ahead of time,”

Mohanty shared. Timely communication is essential, as delays in unloading can negatively impact the quality and market price of the fish.

In addition, connectivity has emerged as a critical safety measure. Notifications regarding cyclones, depressions, or turbulent seas can now be communicated swiftly, providing crews with additional time to take necessary precautions. In an area where extreme weather frequently jeopardizes livelihoods, this digital connection is becoming vital.

Fishing trips often incur significant costs for diesel, food, ice, and drinking water, with boats occasionally traveling vast distances in search of a profitable catch. The ability to remain connected diminishes uncertainty, fosters stronger family bonds, and aids in protecting investments.
