Bhubaneswar: In a celebration of gratitude, protection, and unity that embodies the spirit of Raksha Bandhan, Vedanta Aluminium, the largest aluminium producer in India, conducted a variety of activities across its facilities in Lanjigarh, Jharsuguda, BALCO, and Coal Mines, extending the festival beyond typical observances. The company dispatched over 1,000 handcrafted rakhis and festive gifts to soldiers in some of the nation’s most isolated border areas, while also enabling rural women artisans to display their handcrafted goods and acknowledging the efforts of frontline security personnel. These initiatives exemplified the enduring themes of care, respect, and solidarity associated with the festival.
At Lanjigarh, the occasion transformed into a moment of appreciation for those safeguarding the country far from their homes. Vedanta Aluminium sent more than 1,000 handcrafted rakhis, traditional sweets, festive banners, and locally made figurines—reflecting the rich tribal art and cultural heritage of the region—to soldiers stationed in Siachen, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and the Rajasthan border. Accompanying these gifts were messages of gratitude and support from local communities. The festivities also recognized the vital contributions of security personnel closer to Vedanta’s operations, as employees tied rakhis to representatives from the Odisha Industrial Security Force (OISF), Security Intelligence Services (SIS), and the Lanjigarh Police Station, honoring their commitment to safety in the region.
Rajesh Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating, “The festival of Raksha Bandhan symbolizes protection, gratitude, and community bonding, which are fundamental to our organizational philosophy. This year, we take pride in transforming our celebrations into significant actions that honor the heroic service of our armed forces at remote borders while simultaneously providing economic opportunities for local women artisans. This initiative highlighted that the essence of Raksha Bandhan transcends geographical boundaries and challenging circumstances. An Indian Army officer stationed in Lachung, North Sikkim, expressed his gratitude, saying, “Miles may separate us and snow may surround us, but the bond of the rakhi knows no distance. Thank you to the Vedanta team for remembering the soldiers guarding the nation from the snow-clad mountains of Lachung.”
For those serving in remote areas, the gesture held particular importance. A soldier deployed along the Rajasthan border remarked, “For a soldier standing guard in a remote location, a rakhi embodies the love, blessings, and emotions of a sister. Knowing that someone in Lanjigarh is thinking of a soldier miles away is incredibly uplifting and renews our resolve to serve the nation.”
In Jharsuguda, Vedanta Aluminium utilized the festive period to promote sustainable livelihoods and environmentally friendly craftsmanship through initiatives like Project Subhalaxmi Udyogini and Project Vedkala, which focus on women entrepreneurship and traditional crafts. Women artisans involved in these projects showcased a variety of handmade rakhis crafted from jute, coir, and upcycled materials, merging creativity with sustainability. This initiative provided a platform for artisans to highlight their work while encouraging more environmentally conscious festive choices.
At BALCO, the festival was a chance to celebrate mutual respect and appreciation within the workplace. Local Self-Help Groups (SHGs) tied rakhis to senior management members and representatives from the Fire, Safety, and Security teams, acknowledging their contributions and reinforcing the spirit of gratitude and unity that the festival embodies.
Across Vedanta Aluminium’s Coal Mines, the festivities were marked by initiatives that celebrated community spirit and mindful living. At Jamkhani Coal Mine, Raksha Bandhan events organized in partnership with Om Shanti Brahma Kumaris brought together employees, stakeholders, and community members in a spirit of harmony and mutual respect. Meanwhile, at Kuraloi Coal Mine, nearly 50 students transformed everyday waste into handcrafted rakhis, turning the celebration into a lesson in creativity, resourcefulness, and environmental stewardship.
