In the last twenty years, the landscape of Indian football has experienced significant upheaval, with numerous clubs collapsing due to financial difficulties, inadequate management, and overall neglect.

On Friday, Jamshedpur FC, a team in the Indian Super League (ISL), became the latest to close its doors, adding its name to a growing list of defunct clubs within Indian football.

The withdrawal of Jamshedpur FC marks the 20th club to shut down since the year 2002.

Notable Disbanded Clubs

• FC Kochin, Kerala – Disbanded in 2002: Established in April 1997, FC Kochin was a groundbreaking professional club from Kerala, known as ‘The Elephants’. It made a mark by winning the Durand Cup in its inaugural year, being the only club from Kerala to compete in the NFL during the late 1990s. Financial challenges led to its dissolution around 2002.
• Fransa-Pax FC, Goa – Disbanded in 2006: Founded in 2002, Fransa-Pax FC rose through the Goa Professional League to reach the NFL, finishing fifth in the 2004-05 season. The club controversially folded mid-season following accusations from its owner against the AIFF, leading to its closure in March 2006.
• Mahindra United FC, Maharashtra – Disbanded in 2010: Founded in 1962 in Mumbai, Mahindra United FC garnered numerous accolades, including the NFL and Indian Federation Cup double in 2005-06. However, the club announced its closure after the 2009-10 season to concentrate on grassroots development.
• JCT FC, Punjab – Disbanded in 2011: Established in 1971 in Phagwara, JCT FC was known for its success, including winning the inaugural NFL and several Durand and Federation Cups. The senior team disbanded in 2011, although its academy continues to operate in the Punjab State Super Football League.
• Bengal Mumbai FC, Maharashtra – Disbanded in 2011: Founded in 1998, this club achieved early success but faced financial hurdles, leading to its dissolution in 2011.
• Viva Kerala FC, Kerala – Disbanded in 2012: Also known as Chirag United Club Kerala, this club was founded in 2004 and had its sole success in the KPL during the 2005-06 season. Financial difficulties eventually led to its closure.
• Travancore Titanium FC, Kerala – Disbanded in 2015: Founded in 1973, this club had a rich history but ceased operations due to financial constraints.
• Bharat FC, Maharashtra – Disbanded in 2015: Founded in 2014, Bharat FC had grand ambitions but only lasted a single season in the I-League before financial issues forced its closure.
• Royal Wahingdoh, Meghalaya – Disbanded in 2016: Originally a sports club established in 1946, this team had a notable history but withdrew from the league due to financial pressures.
• Pune FC, Maharashtra – Disbanded in 2016: Established in 2007, Pune FC was forced to shut down due to financial troubles despite some successes in the I-League.
• Mumbai FC, Maharashtra – Disbanded in 2017: This club struggled financially and faced relegation before ceasing operations.
• DSK Shivajians FC, Maharashtra – Disbanded in 2017: This club had a successful local legacy but ultimately closed due to financial difficulties.
• Delhi Dynamos, Delhi – Disbanded in 2019: One of the original ISL teams, it was rebranded as Odisha FC before ceasing to exist.
• FC Pune City, Maharashtra – Disbanded in 2019: Also a founding ISL club, it faced controversies leading to its dissolution.
• Atletico de Kolkata, West Bengal – Disbanded in 2020: Known for its association with Atletico de Madrid, this club had a successful run in the ISL before shutting down.
