Taipei, Aug 1: Tanvi Sharma has made an impressive leap at the Taipei Open 2026, advancing to the women’s singles final with a dominant victory in straight games, thus keeping India’s aspirations for the title alive at the BWF Super 300 tournament.
At the Taipei Arena on Saturday, the world number 34 triumphed over fifth seed and local favorite Huang Yu-hsun with scores of 21-17, 21-11, taking just 33 minutes to complete the match and secure her place in the final against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh on Sunday.
Unlike her quarterfinal encounter against Thailand’s fourth seed Supanida Katethong, where she had to fight back from a challenging position to win in three games, Tanvi showcased full control during the semifinal. She prevented any chance of a comeback from the home crowd, delivering a confident performance to conclude the match in straight games.
This latest success represents a significant achievement in the young athlete’s rapid rise over the past two years. Tanvi has established herself on the international stage, having been part of India’s gold-medal-winning team at the 2024 Badminton Asia Team Championships. In 2025, she secured second place at both the Odisha Masters Super 100 and the Guwahati Masters Super 100 and has previously won the Bonn International in 2024 and the Denmark Challenge in 2025.
India was close to having an all-Indian final in the women’s singles category, but Unnati Hooda’s semifinal elimination dashed those hopes. The teenager lost to sixth seed Nguyen Thuy Linh with scores of 15-21, 18-21, thus setting up the title match against Tanvi.
The men’s singles competition ended on a disappointing note for India, with Kiran George being the last player remaining after HS Prannoy’s exit in the round of 16. George was defeated by Japan’s fourth seed Yudai Okimoto with scores of 21-12, 21-10 in the quarter-finals.
Earlier in the week, India’s challenges in the doubles events had already concluded, with Bhargav Ram Arigela and Viswa Tej Gobburu eliminated in the first round of the men’s doubles.
