BHUBANESWAR: A late-night altercation at a private Plus II college hostel in Gangapada, Khordha district, resulted in injuries to more than ten students, with authorities indicating that ragging may have triggered the violence.

Police reports revealed that the conflict began on Tuesday night when a group of second-year students allegedly attacked first-year students within the hostel. The situation escalated quickly into a significant brawl, leading to multiple injuries among the students.

The injured individuals were transported to a local hospital for medical care. The incident caused alarm on campus, necessitating the deployment of police to ensure safety and order.

Officers from the Info Valley Police Station responded promptly after receiving reports about the confrontation and initiated an investigation. They are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the hostel to clarify the sequence of events and to identify those who participated in the clash.

The violent episode has sparked concern among parents, who are calling for strict measures against those accountable and enhanced protections for hostel residents.

College Principal Pravati Satpathy noted that the conflict stemmed from a prior dispute between the two student groups. She explained, “One or two first-year students allegedly provoked some second-year students, which agitated them. Initially, they attempted to force their way into the hostel. However, the wardens and security staff intervened and managed to send them back to their respective areas.”

Principal Satpathy continued, “Nevertheless, the second-year students returned in greater numbers, broke the hostel gate, entered the premises, and confronted the first-year students, questioning why they had instigated the situation.” She claimed that the seniors attacked the juniors using objects found during the altercation.

“We are conducting an inquiry and will file a First Information Report (FIR). Should the investigation reveal any student involvement, we will take strict disciplinary measures, potentially including expulsion from the college,” Ms. Satpathy stated.

Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and legal actions will be based on the findings. They are also assessing whether the incident constitutes a case of ragging as defined by legal standards.
