Odisha: Vedanta's ₹1 Lakh Crore Projects to Be Reviewed Biweekly, Says Mohan Majhi

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi met with Anil Agarwal, Chairman of Vedanta Group, on Wednesday to discuss accelerating the implementation of the conglomerate’s proposed projects in the state, which involve investments exceeding ₹1 lakh crore.

During a meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan, both parties assessed the progress of Vedanta’s significant projects, including a 6 MTPA alumina refinery in Rayagada, a 3 MTPA aluminium smelter, and a 6,000 MW power plant in Dhenkanal, along with a downstream aluminium park and integrated coal and bauxite operations. The Chief Minister stated that the progress of Vedanta’s projects would be reviewed every 15 days to ensure timely execution and adherence to the schedule. “With investments exceeding ₹1 lakh crore, Vedanta has emerged as one of the largest investors in Odisha. These projects will create massive employment opportunities for the youth and accelerate Odisha’s journey towards becoming a 500-billion-dollar economy by 2036,” Majhi remarked.

The state government has reported that land allocation for the proposed power plant, aluminium smelter, and alumina refinery has been completed, while supporting infrastructure development is ongoing. Vedanta’s new coal block is also anticipated to become operational this year. Furthermore, the Ministry of Railways has approved a proposed rail link near the company’s upcoming bauxite mine. The planned downstream aluminium park near the smelter unit is expected to produce advanced aluminium products for sectors such as aerospace, electric vehicles, and defence. These projects are also projected to promote the growth of thousands of MSMEs across the state.

Agarwal stated that the investments would significantly transform Odisha’s industrial landscape by generating large-scale employment and strengthening local enterprises. “Odisha is poised to emerge as a global aluminium hub. Vedanta remains committed to partnering with the state in its long-term growth and industrial expansion,” he expressed, thanking the state government for its support. The meeting was attended by industries additional chief secretary Hemant Sharma, Chief Minister’s additional chief secretary Saswat Mishra, revenue additional chief secretary Dr. Arabinda Padhee, and senior Vedanta officials.
